Difference between noise reduction and active noise reduction

I got on the bus, and the person sitting beside me was listening to music, and he was wearing headphone and I could hear his music, whatever he was listening to, it was loud but still his facial expression showed that he was not satisfied with his headphone result, bus came to my stop and I got off. Went down to the trains and then again there was another person doing the same thing with the same kind of facial expression and at that point of time question came to my mind why do people play their music that loud.

I had a different point of view what they were trying to do. They are trying to enjoy the music, but the only problem is that there was a lot of back ground noise, and this is what bothers me to. For this type of problem there are two different types of headphones available in the market passive noise reduction / active noise reduction.
Passive noisereduction It is one of the most simple of its kind it can also be stated as noise isolation. The earpieces of these kind of headset or headphone are designed in such a way that it goes into your ear canal and makes it a perfect seal by squeezing into it. They kind of look like the ear bud we use while swimming.

Active noisereduction is one of the most advanced mean of getting things done. These are the noise cancelling headphones used in the aviation by the pilots with the most sophisticated technology. The built in microphone persistently samples the noise and plays it one the loudspeaker thus creating and opposite echo and is cancel.
